Tim

Welcome to Tim Dallas Photography!

Photography has been an important part of my life since early childhood.  With a camera in my hands, I have pursued a much more intimate visual relationship with the world than I might have otherwise.  There is so much beauty around us in color, form and motion… and through photography I have grown to appreciate life in an emotional context that never ceases to amaze me.

I was born and raised in southern California.  My grandfather, who as a young man worked for Kodak for a short time, was an avid amateur photographer.  He took mostly black and white pictures of family members which he processed in a little darkroom in the corner of his garage.  He was my initial inspiration and gave me my first camera, a Brownie, when I was about 8 years old.  I was thrilled by the black and white pictures I took of family and friends.

Upon graduating from high school, I entered college to study music.  After my first year, financial considerations and threat of the draft resulted in my enlisting in the Army.  I returned from a tour in Vietnam in 1970 and immediately enrolled in college with a much greater appreciation of the opportunity. I took my first photography classes while attending CSU Long Beach, but decided to focus my studies on the natural sciences.  I graduated from Humboldt State University in 1975 with a degree in Natural Resources. I began my career as a Park Ranger, working for the National Park Service for several years, mostly in Yosemite.  In 1984, I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where I worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the next 22 years.

Upon retiring from a career with the Federal government in 2006, I decided that 33 years of public service was enough, and that I now had an opportunity to focus on my artistic and creative interests. Photography had always been a serious hobby, and now I had the time to pursue it with the passion I had long intended (although not as much as I had hoped... my "to do" list is long). As a result of my love of outdoor activities (climbing, backpacking, skiing, etc.), nature photography was an obvious path which provided me an intimate connection with the natural world; and although I enjoy the images I may capture after chasing a Sierra sunset, spending hours on a hillside of wildflowers, or tracking Tule Elk all day long, it's the journey that fulfills me. So, though my photography is a very personal activity, I enjoy sharing it in hopes that others will be inspired to protect our natural heritage... for we only save those things we love.

Although I've always considered myself a "nature" photographer," I enjoy photographing people very much. The uniqueness of every individual provides a never ending and always changing "human landscape" that brings out my creativity.

I have been very happily married to my wife Barbara for over 30 years, and we have 2 beautiful daughters, Lauren and Rachel. We live in Concord, California with our two "rescue" dogs, Maggie and Molly. We love road cycling together, traveling when we can (we love Hawaii), hanging our in our new 2nd home at Lake Tahoe, and we always enjoy a good restaurant. When I'm not shooting photos or working with Photoshop, I'm often out trail running.
